Arsenal’s injury woes continue to mount after Gabriel Martinelli suffered a muscle complaint while on international duty with Brazil. The 23-year-old underwent an MRI scan on Sunday, revealing a “muscle edema” in his right calf.
Martinelli’s injury came after playing a substitute role in Brazil’s 2-1 victory over Chile on Friday. He will now remain in Brazil for further physiotherapy and treatment, leaving his availability for Arsenal’s upcoming Premier League match against Bournemouth uncertain.
This latest setback adds to Arsenal’s growing injury concerns. Bukayo Saka suffered an injury with England, while captain Martin Odegaard was previously sidelined during the last international break.
However, there is positive news regarding Saka’s fitness. Interim England boss Lee Carsley confirmed Saka was nearly fit to play in England’s UEFA Nations League win over Finland and is expected to recover soon.
“Arsenal will be relieved to hear that Bukayo would have been close [to playing], but it would have been unfair to take a risk with him,” Carsley said. “He’s a positive person, and I expect him to be fine.”
Mikel Arteta faces a potential selection crisis at the Emirates, with Martinelli’s injury coming at an inopportune time. The winger has scored two goals and registered two assists in Arsenal’s last five games and started five Premier League contests this season.
Arsenal resumes their Premier League title bid against Bournemouth on Saturday, but Martinelli’s availability remains uncertain. Gunners fans will be hoping for a swift recovery.
